Summary: Young Oliver spends
his first nine years at a baby farm, after which he returns to the Workhouse.
He causes havoc when he dares to ask for more food and is sold off to
the undertakers to work as an apprentice. His half-brother Monks is
seeking him out, using the services of Fagin. Just as he is about to
lay his hands on him, he suffers from one of his fits and collapses.
Oliver runs away from the undertakers and from the town and walks to
London. Along the ways he meets a boy, the Artful Dodger, who takes
him to Fagin’s den where he meets Nancy and the terrifying Bill
Sikes. Fagin is working for Monks and they plan to disgrace the boy
in front of Brownlow in order that he forfeits his inheritance. But
the plan backfires when the kindly Brownlow realises Oliver’s
innocence and takes him into his home.
